En este artículo mostramos cómo la todavía dominante concepción de la forma metrópolis, reducida a su perímetro físico o administrativo, contribuye a un entendimiento reducido del proceso de metropolización, dificultando tener la medida justa de la urbanización de los territorios. Por ello proponemos contribuir teórica y metodológicamente a entender la urbanización de destinos rurales por el turismo como un proceso propio de la metropolización. Es a partir del espacio social y la tríada forma, función y estructura que nos interesa construir una concepción crítica y espacialmente amplia. En este trabajo ilustramos cómo este desplazamiento teórico-crítico incide en el método de investigación, específicamente formulando distintas hipótesis conectadas, ofreciendo así pistas genéricas para investigaciones similares. Una de las hipótesis se pone en práctica, a partir de datos empíricos relativos al caso de la expansión metropolitana en el estado de Oaxaca, lo que permite apreciar un primer esbozo de una región metropolitana mucho más extensa que la institucional zona metropolitana de Oaxaca.

In this article we show how the still dominant conception of the metropolis form, reduced to its physical or administrative perimeter, participates in a reduced understanding of the metropolization process, making it difficult to have the right measure of the urbanization of the territories. Therefore, we propose to contribute theoretically and methodologically to understand the urbanization of rural destinations by tourism as a process of metropolization. It is from the social space and the triad of form, function and structure that we are interested in constructing a critical and spatially broad conception. In this work, we illustrate how this theoretical-critical shift affects the research method, specifically by formulating different connected hypotheses, thus offering generic clues for similar research. One of the hypotheses is implemented on the basis of empirical data related to the case of metropolitan expansion in the state of Oaxaca, which allows a first sketch of a metropolitan region much larger than the institutional Metropolitan Zone of Oaxaca.
