The development of sporting tourism by interculturation : the case study of Running Boom in Bali
Research on running is one of the research themes in the social domain that various researchers have widely discussed. They analyzed this phenomenon from various scientific dimensions, such as history, health, social phenomena, politics, to sports tourism. Even though this research is common, especially in the Western world, research on running is a domain researchers in Indonesia have yet to discuss widely. In the last few years, before Covid-19 hit, Bali experienced a "running fever." The community's enthusiasm was relatively high, reflected in the many running events held in Bali. This research takes Bali as the study location, and it aims to answer the research problem related to how running sport tourism develops in Bali and what beneficial impacts running brought to local development. To answer the formulation of the problem, the author adopted a few research approaches; qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods. The results of this study indicated that running as a popular sport in Bali from the beginning cannot be separated from regional and national tourism promotion efforts in the 1980s. The construction of sporting values that occur in modern Balinese society (e.g., health, entertainment, social recognition, etc.) along with the characteristics of Bali as a tourist destination with its various attributes (e.g. place attachment, geographical feature, public & private sector) seems to influence the reconstruction running boom recently. On the other hand, this study also found that running and its events at various scales have the potential to impact local development in social, economic, and environmental areas with a different emphasis on outcomes based on scale. Finally, the Covid-19 pandemic at the beginning of 2020 also changed the direction of the development of the running phenomenon in two different directions; obstacles that reduced interest in running and challenges that spurred various innovations.
