Efforts to realize sustainable tourism development have become an ongoing issue among tourism scholars. As one of the most critical aspects of the tourism system, the accommodation services industry plays a vital role in this achievement. Homestay is one of the accommodation services that can impact tourist destinations. As a small business accommodation operated by the locals, homestay generally offers regional or local uniqueness. This study aims to look into homestay’s contribution to favour sustainable tourism in a tourist destination. This research tries to examine how homestay serves as a vector of sustainable tourism in Bali.The study’s research location is in two tourist destinations in Bali: Ubud and Blimbingsari. We conducted a comparative analysis of two tourist destinations considering the different tourism development stages and culture & religion. Using the case study qualitative analysis method, the author found that the existence of homestay significantly contributed to realizing sustainability in the two destinations with different emphases. Socio-economically, homestay contributes to increasing income and raising the people’s standard of living. Homestay contributes to constant reinvention in the cultural dimension by bridging the gap between tourism and heritage. Environmentally, homestay has a contribution to increasing awareness of environmental conservation. However, on the other hand, the Covid-19 Pandemic shows the vulnerability of an economic model that relies almost entirely on one activity: tourism. Overall, culture and religion influence the conception of homestay in Bali.
