This chapter compares Atlantic island societies in the context of global economic and geopolitical change, with special reference to the Faroe islands. Cycles of economic specialization which correspond to major stages of capitalism are reflected in the fragile economic situations today in small island groups. An examination of specific insular societies facilitates an overview of the problems and phenomena perceived at a variety of independent scales.
