The article highlights the strong encouragement and innovative recommendations of two inspectors general of nursery schools, Pauline Kergomard and Henriette-Suzanne Brès, on the ‘outdoor school’ at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The layout and equipment of the school premises as well as the material devices were then subject to major transformations linked in part to hygienist trends. It will be shown that the credo of the two inspectors, ‘to make the school in the garden or the courtyard’ was above all the desire to develop the health and well-being of the youngest.
